What does a Drywall Acoustic Mechanic & Lather do?
Drywall Acoustic Mechanic & Lathers are similar to Wood Carpenters, except we build everything out of heavy gage and light gauge steel studs, not wood studs. We read from architectural blue prints and erect all exterior/interior stud wall partitions. We also install metal door frames and window frames, variety of acoustical ceilings, pre cast moldings for columns and ceilings. In addition we also install x-ray shielding, thermal and sound insulation. We also work with a variety of drywall panels, metal and vinyl trims and floating access computer floor systems and so much more.

What are the working hours?
Our weekly working hours are based at 37.5 hours per week, but not limited to. Monday thru Thursday from 7 am-3:15 pm and Friday from 7 am-12:30 pm with one 10 minute break in the morning and a 30 minute lunch break in the afternoon. However we are always dictated by a progress schedule, so we are prone too a lot of week end work and overtime.  

How to obtain a Certificate of Qualification in Drywall?
Once apprentices have completed 2 terms of school (Basic & Advance) and 5400 hours of work experience, they may challenge the Certificate of Qualification examination. This is written through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. It costs $100.00 to challenge this test, and a certificate will be granted to those scoring over 70%. This will give you entitlement to a full Journeymen wage and recognition to be able to work anywhere in Ontario with full Journeyman status.
